Record year as European can market grows by almost 4% in 2014
• Total Fillings increase by almost 4% to 63 billion cans
• CSD Fillings increased by 5% to almost 32 billion cans
• Beer Fillings increased by 2% to 31 billion cans
Canadean, who compile the Beverage Can filling figures for BCME, confirmed that 2014 proved to be a record year for Can sales, with almost 63 billion cans filled in Europe. A strong final quarter ensured that can fillings comfortably exceeded 60 billion units.
• Carbonated Soft Drink (CSD) fillings increased by 5%; for the first time CSD fillings exceeded those of Beer
• Beer fillings increased by 2%, another excellent performance for the can, considering an overall drop in beer sales of over 1% across the European region
• Share of canned Beer fillings in Europe now represents 22% of total beer sales
These excellent results were delivered despite a moderate summer, whilst the Football World Cup proved beneficial, helping deliver a positive contribution to can consumption. The winning nation, Germany, saw Beer filling increase by 8%, confirming an accelerating positive trend within this market.
The increasing range of Beverage Can styles and sizes now available to Brand owners aids product differentiation, permitting a wider more diverse range of products to be packaged in cans and increasing consumer consumption occasions.
Norman Lett, BCME Marketing Committee Chairman, said; "This solid increase represents a very positive performance for the Beverage Can market and presents further evidence of how Brand owners and Consumers continue to select Beverage Cans in preference to other packaging formats. We expect to see this trend continue in 2015."
Iain Percival, BCME Chairman added; "Cans are the pack of choice for numerous consumption occasions across the whole range of Carbonated beverages, as they provide convenience, product quality, high efficiency and infinite recyclability. The continued improvement in Beverage can recycling rates across Europe suggests that the industry's recycling programmes, such as Every Can Counts, are having an impact on consumer behaviour."
