The output for the Venezuela-based CVG Venalum’s primary aluminium production fell 19% in December YoY and 1% MoM to 8,173mt from 10,134 mt in December 2013 and 8,271 in November 2014, said the company on Thursday.

A Venalum official said the average cell count for December was 208 which dropped to 198 out of 905, but offered no explanation for the sudden decline.

The company has signed a $498 million-worth modernization contract with China’s Chalieco and officials are hoping that teaming with the subsidiary of the Aluminium Corporation in China will benefit the company in 2015.

According to the official, the new parts and supplies will start coming in around June to help ‘start the cell reactivation process in earnest’.

Three other units at the Puerto Ordaz-based plant are also part of the modernization plan but the foundry will be first priority.

The 430,000 mt/year installed capacity Venalum smelter forms part of the Corporacion Venezolana de Guayana's (CVG) 600,000 mt/year aluminum complex in Puerto Ordaz, Bolivar state.
