Nalco to double wind generation capacity, heads for sustainable growth

National Aluminum Company (Nalco) of India is enhancing its wind power generation capacity by investing around Rs 700 crore.
The company has planned to install an additional 100 MW wind power generation capacity to its existing 100 MW capacity.
“The project will be set up shortly at a suitable location in India”, says, Ansuman Das, chairman cum managing director, Nalco.
Already company owns 100 MW in Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. The Gandikota unit with 50.4 MW capacities in Andhra Pradesh was commissioned in 2012.
The second wind power plant of 47.6 MW capacities at Jaisalmer in Rajasthan was commissioned in January last year.
The central PSU has another proposal to set up a solar power plant in the country to meet its solar purchase obligation.
Besides, Nalco has plans to build a 14-MW wind farm in Odisha.
Moreover, Nalco is trying to gain a coal block to supply for its second smelter and power complex coming up in Sundargarh district.
Nalco has 1,200 MW captive power generation capacity that takes care of the entire electric power requirement of aluminum smelter of the plant.
In addition, it also feeds for 35 MW of the power requirement to the alumina refinery through the state grid.
The firm offers diversified operations in mining, metal and power sectors.
Nalco has commissioned the capacity upgradation of fourth stream of alumina refinery from 525,000 ton to 700,000 ton per year and of bauxite mines from 6.3 million ton to 6.825 million ton per year at an estimated cost of around Rs 400 crore.
Recently, NALCO has won the Engineering Export Promotion Council, Eastern Region’s Gold Trophy, as Top Exporter in Large Enterprise Category, for its export performance during 2012-13.
