The year-end holiday season stall in the market has had its impact on the Australian alumina daily assessment that is issued by Platts, which closed at a flat rate of $354.50/mt FOB last week.

Although the assessment is 50 cents lower than the previous week, when compared to last month, the assessment is actually higher by $2/mt.

While the offers from the producers hovered at $374-375/mt CIF, the buyers’ bids stood at a moderate $370/mt CIF earlier in the week.

The freight rates have hiked up by 25 cents on Friday, for transporting 30,000 mt of alumina from Western Australia to China’s Lianyungang in the month of February, as assessed by Platts.

The lower tonnage and falling bunker prices means that the freight rates have dipped by 25 cents from a week ago and $2.50/mt down from a month ago.
