China’s bauxite imports which were 6.5 million mt in July 2013 is down by 52.3% to 3.1 million mt this July as per the most recent data presented by the General Administration of customs data on Friday 22nd August.

Bauxite imports have fallen sharply since the ban imposed by Indonesia on mineral ore exports as declared on January 12. As a result, the year on year data reveals a 42.3% decline in imports down to 22.8 million mt between January-July.

The July imports were actually higher by 5.7% from the previous month.

Before the ban was imposed, Indonesia was the top supplier of bauxite for China, accounting for nearly 70% of their total imports.

In July this year, there have been no reports of imports from Indonesia, whereas in 2013 4 million mt of material was imported in the same month.

Even through January-July the amount of bauxite imported was less that 65.8% than last year, from 25.7 million mt to 8.8 million mt. China is now looking for supplies from other sources, both seeking new sources and bringing in increased supplies from existing ones.

China’s total bauxite import from Malaysia had been 156,140 mt in 2013 and 198,598 mt in 2012. In comparison, this year total 226,692 mt has been imported in the month of July alone. The first half of 2014 till July has yielded a total of 429,689 mt in terms of Malaysian exports.
