The owners of the Kurri Kurri aluminium plant have told a recent meeting they have no plans to redevelop the site themselves.

The Hydro plant as Kurri Kurri was officially closed earlier this year after being placed in care and maintenance mode about 18 months prior.

The company now wants to remediate the site to allow future development.

A community reference group has been formed as plans for the site are developed.

The group, which met for the first time last month, was told Hydro has 'no ambition to develop the site' itself, 'but rather facilitate the rezoning to ultimately sell the land'.

Managing Director Richard Brown said Hydro is not interested in selling the land block by block.

Instead, its current thinking is to remediate, rezone and get out relatively quickly.

He said the company was looking at a 5 to 10 year timeframe.

    Unclear future for speedway

The future of the Kurri Kurri Speedway track is yet to be decided as Hydro considers its options to redevelop the site.

The track is located on part of the smelter site.

Mr Brown told the community group Hydro is working on a positive outcome when it comes to the speedway track.

But he said the company needs to consider where and how it would operate as part of any future development plans.

Mr Brown told the meeting noise is a factor which could impact on residential development.

He said while the track is only used on certain days Hydro will need to weigh up the overall benefits to the community.

The speedway track was a training ground for two-time MotoGP World Champion and former Kurri resident, Casey Stoner.
