Aluminum Corp. of China Ltd. (ACH) will cut its alumina price to CNY3,200 a metric ton from CNY3,500/ton effective Aug. 1, traders and industry Web sites said Thursday.
China's largest aluminum and alumina producer cut its alumina price by 17% to CNY3,500/ton from CNY4,200/ton in early June.
"I think the main reason (for the price cut) is that production capacity is expanding fast, especially plants in the Guangxi (Zhuang Autonomous) Region," said an analyst at a metals consultancy.
A Chalco official said earlier the company's Pingguo plant in the Guangxi region was expected to raise output by 880,000 tons by the end of June, increasing the plant's total capacity to 1.68 million tons.
Alumina, which is made from bauxite, is used to make aluminum.
