Matalco, a subsidiary of the Giampaolo Group, which also runs recycling firm Triple M Metal is expanding, the only trouble is that it won’t be happening in Brampton but rather in Lordstown, Ohio where a $92 million plant is expected to come up. metalco
The plant that will produce its 6000 series extrusion-grade aluminum billets manufactured for a range of industries.
The U.S. plant will help grow Matalco’s aluminum scrap business and allow the company to better integrate with Triple M, which runs metal recycling plants in Brampton and Kitchener.
The company has yet to reveal when the Ohio-based plant will be up and running or how many jobs the new facility will create.
The City of Brampton would have loved the expansion to have happened here, but could draw cold comfort in knowing that atleast operations at the existing plant won’t be affected.
Manufacturing jobs continue to hemorrhage from Ontario. Brampton Canada’s 6th largest city with a rapidly growing population is aggressively pursuing businesses to set up operations in the city or expand.
In early May a Unilever plant in Bramalea which makes manufactures dry mixes for soups, sauces and other foods announced it was moving its production capability to the US. The plant will close in March, 2016.
As the cost of doing business in Ontario becomes an issue, many more companies may continue to seek out places where labour costs and taxes are lower.
