A partnership between Constellium and UACJ is starting construction on a $150 million plant in Bowling Green, Kentucky, to supply aluminum sheet to the North American automotive industry, the office of Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear said Wednesday.
In a statement, Beshear's office said the plant will produce finished body sheets for cars and trucks. The two-term governor, a Democrat, joined in a groundbreaking ceremony for the 225,000-square-foot plant at the Kentucky Transpark. About 80 jobs are expected to be created by the project.
Production is scheduled to start in the first half of 2016, with full capacity reached by 2018.
Constellium, a European aluminum company, and UACJ, a Japanese aluminum company, will supply the aluminum coils that will be treated and processed in Bowling Green.
Tri-Arrows Aluminum, based in Louisville, will be one of the key suppliers of cold-rolled aluminum coils to the new partnership, according to the statement. The subsidiary of UACJ manufactures its base aluminum coils at its joint venture operating mill at Logan Aluminum in Russellville in Logan County, Kentucky.
The joint venture has an initial target capacity of 100,000 mt/year, according to UACJ. The plant is designed for expansion beyond 100,000 mt.
