Aluminium scrap market in the Middle East 'at nascent stage'

The Gulf Co-Operation Council (GCC) region’s aluminium scrap market will achieve an annual growth rate of around 10.6% between the period 2010 to 2017. According to Frost & Sullivan, the research firm, the volume of scrap that originates from Middle East will reach 500 000 tons by 2015.

Of these total volume, about 360 000 tons will be exported to South Korea, Pakistan, India, North America, Europe and other markets. Out of these, 'The Middle East - the GCC is considered one of the world’s fastest growing aluminium markets , says Venkatesan Subramanian, Metals & Minerals Practice at Frost & Sullivan’s vice president & global leader.

The Middle East has a total aluminium recycling rate of about 20% and it includes smelter remelting, secondary remelting and scrap generation. The Middle East being a predominantly export-driven region has an aluminium scrap market that is 'at a nascent stage' and downstream industry still needs time to develop as a major scrap producer.

According to the recent analysis by Frost & Sullivan of the aluminium scrap & recycling market in the Gulf Co-Operation Council, 'the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has positioned itself as a major hub for scrap metal recycling, followed by the United Arab Emirates, in the Middle East.'
