Desi Bouterse, the President of Suriname says Aluminum Company of America, (ALCOA) has plans of cutting down their production at Suralco that would result in lay off 1,000 workers which includes 800 contractors.

Bouterse told Parliament that the issue is of "a national matter of concern for which a joint solution must be found".

Since 1916, Suralco has remained active in Suriname as mining bauxite for feeding Paranam refinery. With a total output of around 2.2 mn metric tons every year, operation of bauxite mining stood as the main earner of Suriname.

Last week, one of the top executives of ALCOA’s office based in Latin America visited Suriname to give out the plans of the company. The company officials said, they would have to cut down the total production to around 360,000 tons annually of refined bauxite in order to maintain their presence in Suriname.
