Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), one of the world’s leading smelters, made a big step towards a greener environment with the inauguration of it’s first-ever “green “amenity building. The single story amenity building, catering mainly to Power Station 3 & 4 employees, incorporates many green technologies such as solar panels and energy efficient appliances as compared to conventional factors.

The building makes use of highly efficient solar water heating facility for the showers, as well as energy saving “LED” light fittings throughout the building. These two initiatives alone reduce the building power consumption by 40 kW, which is equivalent to the power required for around 23 tonnes of aluminium per annum.

Passive engineering construction techniques -- insulated-type brick walls and double glazed high U/V filter windows – have been incorporated, which substantially reduce the load on the air conditioning system. The compact power loading has considerably reduced the capital requirements for power installation supply with average current consumption being reduced to c.100A, as opposed to c.300A expected if constructed as per the older building standards.

Commenting on this initiative, Alba’s Director for Power, Amin Sultan said:
“As one of the world’s largest smelters, and a leading company in Bahrain, Alba’s leadership and decisions play a huge role in influencing the society. This green initiative clearly exemplifies our environmental values and I thank all the teams for an excellent job. We remain committed to achieve sustainability and reduce the carbon foot print for a better future.”

The green amenity building project was managed and executed by Alba’s Engineering & Infrastructure Department, which will also incorporate the new energy efficiency standards in all future building projects in Alba.
