Hydro will build a new, integrated recycling line for used aluminium beverage cans at its Neuss plant in Germany. The line will be completed by end 2015, and increase the plant's existing annual recycling capacity of 50,000 tonnes to more than 100,000 tonnes.

In addition to more than doubling the recycling capacity at the Neuss plant, the new recycling line will be able to process a wide range of used beverage cans. The liquid aluminium metal produced at the recycling center will serve as input material for making new beverage cans.

"With this investment, we are meeting a growing customer demand for recycled aluminium and closed recycling loop, while pursuing our growth strategy for the beverage cans market," says Oliver Bell, executive vice president and head of Hydro's Rolled Products business area.

The recycling line will utilize newly designed sensor technology for sorting and separating different types of recycled metal, developed at Hydro's research and development center in Bonn.

The new recycling line has a project cost of EUR 45 million and will employ around 40 people when in operation, and is in line with an Hydro's ambition to double the company's total recycling capacity and to become carbon neutral by 2020.
