Novelis to supply US brewery Red Hare with recycled aluminum cans

Georgia craft brewery Red Hare Brewing Co has become the first customer for aluminum sheetmaker Novelis' Evercan, a can made mostly of recycled aluminum, the companies said Wednesday.

"This introduction marks the commercial availability of the world's first certified high-recycled content aluminum beverage can," said Phil Martens, president and CEO for Novelis, in a statement.

"Working with Red Hare, we have developed a proven supply chain to deliver this industry-first offering to consumers, setting an example that other beverage companies are sure to follow," Martens said.

Roger Davis, founder and CEO of Red Hare, a microbrewery in Marietta, Georgia, said the company had been attracted by the independent certification verifying the high level of recycled material in the can.

"The independent certification of the closed-loop recycling process behind Evercan strengthens our commitment to employing the best in sustainable business practices, making Evercan a natural extension of the Red Hare brand," he said in the same statement.

The companies also announced the agreement Wednesday at the Craft Brewers Conference in Denver.

On a video on Novelis' website, Davis also said the can was a better carrier for its beer than bottles because it does not let in light or air.

The aluminum sheet used to make the Evercan uses a minimum of 90% recycled aluminum and the recycled content of the sheet is certified by Scientific Certification Services, an independent certification service for environmental sustainability, according to Novelis' website.
