Aluminium rod, wire and conductor factory opens in Tomago

A new, $60 million factory has been opened by Bahrain’s Midal Cables International at Tomago.

The ABC reports that the plant, which was opened last Friday, will source its aluminium locally, and will create rods, wire and conductors out of the metal.

NSW minister for trade Andrew Stoner said it was hoped as many as 100 new jobs would be created through the opening of the factory, which would produce up to 50,000 tonnes of aluminium products a year.

“Manufacturing is an important and vital part of a diverse NSW economy, with NSW manufacturers generating some $35 billion in value-added for the State each year,” he said in a statement.

“NSW Trade & Investment worked closely with Midal Cables International throughout this project, from initial site feasibility through to the planning and development stages.”

Midal said the factory’s location was a vote of confidence in the Hunter’s business environment, and in the state’s manufacturing capabilities.

It also cited Australia’s location and closeness to markets such as the US and Asia.

“But also this country enjoys a high level of free trade agreements with the rest of the world and we are looking at this factory to be the hub for servicing the Pacific Rim," Midal’s managing director Hamid Al Zayani told the ABC.
