Indonesia's ban on the export of bauxite has come into being for almost over 2 months but it hasn’t impacted the Chinese imports.
China’s February bauxite imports have witnessed a reduction this year.
China imported 3.2 mn tons in February and 2.13 mn came from Indonesia.
Bauxite imports from Indonesia were 22.2% lower than that it was in February 2013. But the imports for the first 2 months of 2014 were 44 %higher than 2013 at 8.3 mn tons.
Before the ban came into effect, Indonesia was largest supplier of bauxite to China accounting to about 12% of global market and the trade is worth almost $3 billion per year.
Indonesia hasn’t released their data for February yet but according to their January report, the shipments of ore dropped by 70.1% in the period from January to December. This has balanced the deficit made by the trade after three months of surplus.
