    AZ China’s 4th International Aluminium and Carbon conference which will be held at Sofitel Hotel in Beijing, May 5-7 has recently announced a full list of speakers, including the former Australian Ambassador to China, Dr Geoff Raby, Economist, author and member of Bloomberg’s Beijing team, Tom Orlik and Ron Knapp, Secretary General, International Aluminium Institute.

    These speakers will be discussing where China is headed over the next 5 years. China has been the focus of the aluminium industry for years and will continue to be so as more and more production takes place in a country which is well known for cheaper manufacturing costs. By the year 2020, China will have around 60 million tonnes of primary aluminium capacity, while production in the rest of the world will be exceeded 30 million tonnes. The rapid expansion of capacity in China’s Northwest will be history, while the rest of the world will struggle to find new stranded energy sources to support additional smelting capacity.

    Such huge aluminium capacity generates a number of challenges:

    · China will need 84 million megawatts of electricity, in a country where electricity is scarce;

    · The world will need close to 400 million tonnes of bauxite, refined into almost 200 million tonnes of alumina;

    · China will need about 25 million tonnes of anodes, which in turn will need more than 30 million tonnes of petroleum coke. But not just any petcoke – it must be of a suitable grade to make into anodes.

    · Cathodes, aluminium fluoride and other inputs to the process will all see an increase in demand.

    But it is not just a question of supply of raw materials. More technological breakthroughs are needed simply to sustain the smelting process. The world is rolling out more and more carbon and greenhouse gas emission controls, regulations and taxes.

    It is not enough to be simply up with the latest trends in technology, processes and markets. To really succeed in tomorrow’s world, one needs to have the answers to these questions and the solutions to the challenges – before it’s too late.

    AZ China, an aluminium consulting company based in China, holds a conference every two years. When asked why not every year, AZ China’s managing director, Paul Adkins said, “We believe that the event is too important to hold annually. We want to look at the big picture, the long term view, and consider the overall direction of the industry and the market. This includes looking at technology, standards of excellence, global balances and so on. We believe in the value of a high quality event, meticulously planned, and one which will allow you the attendees to plan for well ahead. “

    The event is sponsored by RainCII, Koppers, Bathco, Qingxin Carbon, Aminco Anodes, Sinoway Petro, the International Aluminium Institute, Metal Bulletin, Fastmarkets, AlCircle, SCI99 and Albiz.
