Russian Rusal's total aluminium output for 2013 slips to record low, it may fall further in 2014

Russia's Rusal total aluminium production for the year 2013 was 3.86 million mt, the lowest output ever since it merged with Sual in 2007. In 2014 it expects a fall further in total output to 3.5 million mt, Rusal said Tuesday.

The production in 2013 around 3.86 million mt was down by 8% from 2012 production of 4.17 million mt and also lower than 2009 total production of 3.94 million mt, when demand of aluminium was hit by the global financial crisis.

"2013 witnessed the supply side adopting a disciplined approach to production, with Rusal successfully completing its production cut program which resulted in cuts of 316,000 mt, or 8%, compared to 2012," Rusal CEO Oleg Deripaska said in the statement.

"Reduced operational levels are expected to be sustained throughout 2014 as Rusal remains at the forefront of creating an efficient supply side dynamic," Deripaska added.

The total production capacity of Rusal is is 4.5 million mt/year across their fourteen aluminium smelters worldwide. Of these, 12 have cut down on their output in 2013 from 5% - 90%. Krasnoyarsk and Bratsk were the exceptions, the two smelters located in Siberia that have two largest aluminium production units, each having a capacity of 1 million mt/year. These two smelters saw an increase of 0.2-0.7% in their output in 2013.

The company's aluminum production in 2008 was the highest at 4.42 million mt.

The alumina production of Rusal was 7.31 million mt in the year 2013, fell by 2% year on year, but a rise from 7.27 million mt in 2009. It operates eleven alumina refineries which includes joint ventures as well.

The total output for bauxite was 11.87 million mt, low by 4% year on year and higher than total production in 2009 was11.3 million mt.
