China Alumina Import Down 50% in July

(China Aluminum Network) According to China Customs, China imported 230 thousand tons of alumina in July, up 156% M-O-M, down 50% Y-O-Y. From January to July, the total import volume was 1880 thousand tons, decreased 36% Y-O-Y.

Compared with domestic raw materials, the price of imported alumina was lack of attraction. Thus domestic alumina market supply increased, while Chinese aluminum manufacturers cut import volume.

Australian alumina price (FOB) has been falling since May, in July dropped to $318.4 per metric ton. Though the price is higher than $309 in last year, still it is the floor level since last September.

The survey found that since there is no space for further decreasing of domestic alumina price, but Australian alumina price was more acceptable. Some Chinese alumina traders have decided will enhance alumina import in later this year.
