Aluminum demand from the Chinese transport sector is expected to reach 5.7 million mt by 2015, the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association said at China Metal Seminar held in Hong Kong Monday.

Aluminum consumption by the Chinese car sector is expected to hit 4 million mt/year by 2015 and that of the motorcycle and bicycle sectors, 1.4 million mt/year. Aluminum demand by the container and railway industries is expected to hit 120,000 mt/year, and 80,000 mt/year, by 2015.

CNIA figures showed that aluminum demand by the Chinese transport sector was just 1.93 million mt in 2007, rising to 3.83 million mt in 2011. CNIA did not provide the 2012-14 figures.

"Aluminum has the attribute of good recycling, favoring resources re-use, stimulating aluminum demand," Li Defeng, deputy director of the light metal department of CNIA said.
