May US aluminum shipments, inventories down year over year: MSCI

US service centers shipped 132,400 mt of aluminum products in May, down 2.7% from May 2012, the Metals Service Center Institute said Tuesday.
Aluminum shipments in the first five months of the year totaled 617,200 million mt, 7.1% below the same period last year, MSCI said in a statement.
Inventories of aluminum products hit 368,000 mt at the end of May, a decrease of 4.6% over May 2012, though 0.25% above April. MSCI said that at the current shipping rate, this represents a 2.8-month supply in aluminum inventory, unchanged from a year ago.
It said 14,500 mt of aluminum products were shipped by Canadian service centers in May, 0.5% below the same month last year. Canada's aluminum shipments in the first five months of 2013 were 67,000 mt, 4.1% below 2012.
Canadian service center inventories of aluminum products were 37,200 mt in May, an increase of 2.7% from May 2012.
Illinois-based MSCI noted that at the current shipping rate, Canada's aluminum distributors were carrying a 2.6-month supply in inventory, unchanged from April 2013 and a year ago.
