The data from General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China showed that in May, China's imported alumina totaled 200,000 tons, decreased by 72 percent year-on-year, and 38% month-on-month. January to May this year, China's imported alumina totaled 1.56 million tons, decreased by 28% year-on-year. This was caused by the domestic output reduction of electrolytic aluminum and the increase of market share of domestic alumina.
According to statistics, in the first four months, more than 10 domestic electrolytic aluminum enterprises reduced production capacity, about 900,000 tons per year. From June, Aluminum Corporation of China Limited and other five companies plan to cut 850,000 tons production capacity per year. With the increase of this phenomenon, electrolytic aluminum production capacity cut is still widening.
