Chalco, the country's top producer of aluminium, is suspending production at Shanxi Huaze Aluminum & Power Co in the northern Chinese province due to power shortage.
The facility is gradually cutting its output without providing estimates of likely losses. The facility, jointly run with Shanxi Zhangze Electric Power Co, has a production capacity of 280,000 metric tons per year.
The Shanxi provincial government ordered local smelters to halve output to guarantee power supply for summer farming.
Shanxi Huasheng Aluminum Co, another Chalco venture with Shanxi Guanlu Co, is also facing power shortage. This unit has an annual capacity of 220,000 metric tons.
The company expects net profit for the first half to drop more than 50% because of surging raw materials and fuel costs, compared with a net profit of RMB 6.4 billion a year earlier.
