The Ministry of Land and Resources announced Chalco (Guizhou) has obtained mining rights to Maochang bauxite mine.
Chalco (Guizhou) is located in Guiyang’s Baiyun District, 22 km from Qingzhen city. MLR data show that close to 300 million mt in proven bauxite reserves have been discovered in Qingzhen, which also boasts over 500 million mt in prospective reserves, more than 10% of China’s total reserves, and 70% of Guizhou’s total reserves. Maochang mine, with 210 million mt in bauxite reserves, is China’s largest proven bauxite mine.
Chalco (Guizhou)’s designed alumina capacity is 1.2 million mt/yr. The company produced 272,000 mt of alumina in the first quarter this year. Assuming 2 mt of bauxite is required per ton of aluminum produced, 544,000 mt of bauxite is needed for Q1 and 2.18 million mt for the full year of 2013. Its bauxite mines are scattered in Wudang District, Qingzhen City, Xiuwen County and Zunyi City.
The exploitation of bauxite in Maochang mine will ensure stable raw material supply for Chalco (Guizhou). Besides, operations began on its Longtanba section of Maiba bauxite mine in Qingzhen on April 6, and bauxite was produced on May 8.
