Data from China Customs show that China imported 320,000 mt of alumina during April, up 14.3% YoY and 120,000 mt MoM. YTD imports through April totaled 1.36 million mt, down 5.6% YoY.
SMM attributes the rebound in China’s alumina imports in April to falling Australian alumina prices. The FOB price for Australian alumina was weighted down by LME aluminum prices to USD 324/mt in April, USD 11/mt off March.
Chinese aluminum smelters using imported alumina preferred domestic raw materials in May as supply of domestic alumina has increased and as imported alumina enjoys no price advantage over domestic goods.
FOB prices for Australian alumina in May climbed USD 6/mt from the lowest price in April to USD 328/mt. Domestic alumina prices, in contrast, remained weak. As such, China’s alumina imports may decline in the future.
