Nichidenbo (NDB), a distributor of Nippon Chemi-con in Taiwan, indicated that it plans to raise the price of aluminum capacitors by 3-10% from July in order to reflect rising material costs.

Material costs account for about 60% of the total cost of aluminum capacitors, and the current price of aluminum rising to US$3,000 per metric ton from US$2,400 in January 2006, spurred the price adjustment, said Nichidenbo.

Nichidenbo indicated that sales to the high-end motherboard sector was poor in the first five months of 2008, which led to a 476% on-year sales decline in the information technology (IT) applications segment. As of May 2008, Nichidenbo saw only 33% of its sales accounted for by the IT segment.

Regarding sales outlook for the second half of 2008, Nichidenbo said seasonality should boost motherboard and notebook sales during August and September. Sales of solid and aluminum capacitors should be spurred accordingly. But the company remains conservative about sales of high-end motherboards amid the impact from the subprime mortgage crisis. Also, demand for inductors should pick up in anticipation of growing orders from digital camera and handset customers.
