KUCHING: Sarawak Aluminium Company’s (Salco) proposed US$2 billion aluminium smelter in Similajau, Bintulu, has been granted a manufacturing licence by the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority (Mida).

Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) business development senior vice president, Sandeep Biswas, said the granting of the licence is a demonstration of the Malaysian government’s confidence in the project.

“The federal government’s support, through the granting of the licence from the Malaysian Industrial Development Authority, is a recognition of the significant benefits the Salco smelter can deliver for Malaysia and Sarawak,” he said in a press statement yesterday.

Salco is a joint venture between RTA and Cahya Mata Sarawak (CMS). The proposed smelter will have a production capacity of 550,000 tonnes per year in its initial phase with the capability to be expanded to 1.5 million tons.
